Hanoi, Vietnam: Thousands of people were evacuated from central and northern Vietnam on Sunday as Typhoon Bualoi sped toward the country, with landfall expected later in the day.
The storm has already caused at least 20 deaths in the central Philippines since Friday, mostly from drowning and falling trees, and has disrupted power in several towns and cities. About 23,000 families were moved to over 1,400 emergency shelters in the Philippines.
Vietnam’s weather agency reported that Bualoi was located about 200 kilometers (124 miles) east of central Vietnam early Sunday, moving northwest toward the coast. The typhoon is expected to make landfall between Quang Tri and Nghe An provinces, bringing winds of up to 133 kph (83 mph), storm surges over a meter (3.2 feet), and heavy rains that could trigger flash floods and landslides.
Authorities in Vietnam have grounded fishing boats along northern and central coasts and ordered large-scale evacuations. In Da Nang, over 210,000 people are to be relocated, while Hue plans to move more than 32,000 coastal residents to safer areas.
The Civil Aviation Authority suspended operations at four coastal airports, including Danang International Airport, and rescheduled several flights.
Heavy rainfall since Saturday night has caused flooding in central provinces. In Hue, streets were submerged, roofs were damaged, and at least one person went missing after being swept away by floodwaters. In Quang Tri province, a fishing boat sank while seeking shelter; eight people were rescued, and rescue operations continue for three others at sea.
Forecasters warned that rain could continue until October 1, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides in northern and central provinces.
Bualoi is the second major storm to hit the region in a week. Earlier, Typhoon Ragasa claimed at least 28 lives in northern Philippines and Taiwan before making landfall in China and weakening over Vietnam. Experts say global warming is intensifying storms like Bualoi, producing stronger winds, heavier rainfall, and unpredictable weather patterns across East Asia.
