Gardaí in Drogheda, County Louth, have taken two men in their 20s into custody after a deliberate fire broke out at a building housing people applying for international protection late on Friday. The blaze was reported to have been started intentionally and endangered several residents, including young children.
An immediate criminal investigation was opened following the incident. Emergency crews moved quickly to evacuate the property, rescuing five occupants from the upper floor — four of them children. Multiple residents were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for medical checks after being removed from the scene.
Police investigators say the fire was deliberately set by unknown individuals. One suspect was arrested on Wednesday night and a second the following morning; both face suspicion of offences under the Criminal Damage Act 1991 as inquiries continue to establish the full circumstances.
A Garda spokesperson described the episode as "an extremely dangerous act endangering the lives of the residents," underlining the particular risk to children and other vulnerable people. The spokesperson also praised the prompt response by emergency teams that ensured everyone was evacuated safely.
The incident has renewed concerns about the safety and security of accommodation for those seeking international protection. Gardaí have appealed to anyone with information to come forward to assist the ongoing investigation.
Residents of Drogheda have expressed relief that no one sustained life-threatening injuries and are awaiting further updates as Gardaí continue their enquiries.
