On November 25, 2025, Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi disclosed that she had a supportive exchange with former U.S. President Donald Trump during their first conversation following a recent diplomatic clash with China. Trump stated, “Call me anytime,” providing reassurance to Japan amidst escalating regional tensions.
This call followed Takaichi's earlier comments in Japan’s parliament, where she suggested that a potential Chinese aggression towards Taiwan might trigger a military response from Japan. This assertion provoked a strong reaction from China, which views Taiwan as part of its territory and has not dismissed the use of force to assert control over the island. China retaliated with travel restrictions against Japan.
Taiwan, just about 100 kilometers from Japanese shores, firmly rejects China's claims, asserting that only its citizens hold the right to determine their future. This delicate scenario has placed Japan, a vital U.S. ally, in a challenging position amid the intensifying regional conflicts.
Following the conversation, Takaichi informed reporters that Trump reaffirmed their cordial relationship and encouraged her to reach out whenever needed. During their discussion, Trump also shared updates regarding U.S.-China relations and his recent dialogue with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who reportedly asserted that Taiwan’s “return to China” is essential to Beijing's global vision. However, Trump has not made any public remarks about Taiwan concerning his talks with Xi.
The U.S. government has yet to comment on the dialogue between Trump and Takaichi. Japan's administration continues to strive for stable relations with both the U.S. and China, understanding that maintaining peaceful connections is crucial for regional and global stability.
In recent years, Japan has bolstered its military capabilities at the encouragement of the U.S., aiming to counter China’s increasing assertiveness. Recently, it announced plans to station a medium-range missile unit at Yonaguni Island, in proximity to Taiwan, which Beijing criticized as a provocative act, heightening tensions. Additionally, Japan has deployed fighter jets after identifying a Chinese drone near Yonaguni.
Despite the rising tensions, Japan is open to dialogues with China to mitigate conflicts. Recently, Japan's vice foreign minister engaged with China’s ambassador in Tokyo to discuss ongoing matters. However, China dismissed calls for a meeting between Takaichi and Chinese Premier Li Qiang at a recent G20 summit.
Takaichi, recently appointed, is considered a strong nationalist, enjoying high public support in Japan. Her resolute stance on Taiwan-China matters indicates possible prolonged tensions in Japan-China relations.
Concerns linger within Japan regarding Trump’s stance on Taiwan. Some officials fear that Trump may prioritize trade deals with China over Taiwan’s security needs, which experts suggest could embolden China to act more aggressively in the region.
Japan remains vigilant, balancing its alliance with the U.S. while navigating its intricate relationship with China, all the while advocating for Taiwan’s right to self-determination.
This ongoing diplomatic saga underscores the fragile and intricate nature of East Asia's dynamics, where significant powers and regional stakeholders navigate a web of security, diplomacy, and economic interests.
