Trump Legal Cases Collapse as Georgia Charges Dropped Completely

Trump Legal Cases Collapse as Georgia Charges Dropped Completely

Post by : Rameen Ariff

President Donald Trump’s legal battles have shifted dramatically since he returned to the White House. The last major criminal case against him — the Georgia election interference case — was dismissed on Wednesday, marking the end of all four criminal cases that once threatened his freedom and political future.

Georgia Case Dismissed

The Georgia case ended after the newly appointed prosecutor decided not to continue with the charges. This case had accused Trump and several others of trying to overturn his narrow defeat to Joe Biden in Georgia after the 2020 election. The accusations included pressuring state officials, attempting to replace certified electors and accessing election equipment without permission.

However, the case stalled after the previous prosecutor was removed due to a personal conflict. Once the new prosecutor took over, he chose to drop the charges completely, leading the judge to dismiss the case in full.

Hush Money Conviction Stays on Record

In May 2024, Trump became the first former US president to be convicted of felonies. A New York jury found him guilty of falsifying business records to hide a hush-money payment made during the 2016 election. The payment was meant to silence an adult film actor who claimed she had a sexual encounter with him.

Although the conviction technically remains, Trump was not given jail time. In January, the judge issued an unconditional discharge, meaning Trump received no punishment. The judge said he had to respect Trump’s upcoming presidential duties as he was preparing to take office again.

Trump is now trying to overturn this conviction, and a recent court decision has reopened the possibility of moving the case to federal court.

Federal Election Interference Case Dropped

In another major case, prosecutors had accused Trump of trying to overturn the 2020 election nationwide by spreading false claims of voter fraud and pressuring officials to overturn the results. However, once Trump won the 2024 election, prosecutors dropped the case. Under long-standing rules, a sitting president cannot be criminally prosecuted.

Classified Documents Case Also Withdrawn

Trump also faced charges for keeping classified documents at his Florida home after leaving office and resisting government attempts to retrieve them. This case included allegations that he showed sensitive military documents to visitors. That case, too, was dropped after his return to the presidency.

Civil Lawsuits Continue

While his criminal cases have ended, several civil cases are still active:

E. Jean Carroll Case

A jury previously found that Trump sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s and later defamed her. Carroll was awarded a total of $88.3 million across two trials. Trump is now trying to appeal these decisions, and some parts of the case are still under review.

New York Fraud Case

New York’s attorney general accused Trump of inflating the value of his properties to mislead lenders and insurers. A judge initially ordered him to pay more than $350 million. Later, an appeals court ruled that the penalty was too high but agreed he had committed fraud. The financial penalty was removed, but other restrictions — such as temporary bans on him and his sons holding leadership positions — still remain. The state has appealed to reinstate the larger penalty.
