In a groundbreaking diplomatic gesture, US President Donald Trump has pledged unwavering support for Syria after significant talks with Ahmed al-Sharaa, marking a notable change in Washington's stance towards the conflict-stricken nation.
Sharaa's visit to Washington, the first by a Syrian president, followed his initial meeting with Trump in Saudi Arabia six months prior, where discussions about lifting certain US sanctions first emerged. The Syrian leader aimed to achieve the complete removal of the stringent Caesar Act sanctions imposed in 2019, which have heavily impacted Syria's economy. While Trump and Sharaa met privately, the US Treasury Department revealed a 180-day extension on the suspension of these sanctions. Only Congress has the power to fully repeal them.
During a press briefing, Trump commended Sharaa as a 'strong leader', expressing optimism about his capability to steer Syria towards stability. 'We will do everything possible to ensure Syria's success,' the US president remarked, acknowledging Sharaa's controversial history. 'We’ve all had difficult pasts.'
At just 43, Sharaa ascended to power last year after his forces ousted long-standing autocrat Bashar al-Assad. Since his elevation, he has endeavored to reshape Syria's global standing as a moderate nation targeting unity and reconciliation with the international community. He indicated a shift away from traditional allies like Iran and Russia, seeking a partnership with the US, Turkey, and Gulf nations.
The Treasury Department's affirmation of 'continued sanctions relief' follows a waiver issued on May 23 regarding the Caesar Act, extending the moratorium for an additional 180 days. This indicates the US administration's readiness to support Sharaa's transitional government while fostering reforms and peace in Syria.
Security and military collaboration were anticipated to be primary topics in the dialogue between the two leaders. Washington is reportedly facilitating negotiations for a potential security agreement between Syria and Israel, and there may be plans for a US military presence at a Damascus airfield to aid in protecting this delicate transition.
Experts suggest this meeting is indicative of a larger shift in US policy, now viewing Syria as a potential geopolitical partner rather than a threat in the Middle East. Despite the daunting challenges of rebuilding a nation ravaged by years of conflict, both leaders conveyed a sense of hope regarding future US-Syria relations.
This historic meeting and the accompanying ongoing diplomatic dialogue represent a significant turning point for Syria, granting the nation a chance to break free from its isolation and forge stronger connections with Washington and its allies.
