In a heartbreaking incident off the coast of Beira, Mozambique, three Indian nationals have tragically lost their lives, with five more still unaccounted for. The disaster struck on Friday during a regular crew transfer operation to a tanker at anchor. The Indian community is reeling from the news as search and rescue efforts are underway to find the missing individuals.
According to information from the Indian High Commission in Mozambique, a launch boat carrying 14 Indian crew members capsized under unclear circumstances amid rough sea conditions near Beira Port. Initial assessments suggest that the turbulent weather played a part, though investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact causes behind the capsizing.
“This incident has left us in sorrow,” stated the Indian High Commission. “We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families as we work tirelessly to assist them.”
Five crew members have been rescued so far, as confirmed by the High Commission. One survivor requires medical attention at a Beira hospital, while the remaining are reported to be in safe condition. A consular representative has been dispatched to manage the situation and ensure the rescued individuals receive the support they need.
The boat had nearly completed its crew transfer when it unexpectedly overturned, with some passengers managing to hold on to floating debris and being saved by nearby vessels. However, others were lost to the tumultuous waters.
Ongoing search and rescue activities involve local authorities and the Indian High Commission coordinating efforts to locate the missing individuals. This incident has sparked a prompt investigation into safety protocols for offshore crew transfers in the region.
In a series of updates via X, the High Commission expressed profound grief and committed to making every effort to locate the missing crew members. “We convey our heartfelt condolences for the tragic loss of three Indian nationals during this incident off Beira port,” they stated. “Our staff is actively communicating with local officials and families to provide necessary assistance.”
The Commission is monitoring the situation closely and has maintained open lines of communication with Mozambican authorities, also consulting with Indian firms employing the individuals involved. Indian officials are expected to collaborate with maritime authorities for an exhaustive investigation into this tragic event.
“We are working diligently with authorities in Mozambique,” affirmed an embassy spokesperson. “Our primary focus is the safe recovery of the missing individuals and the care of those rescued.”
Search operations have escalated since Friday, as the Mozambican coastguard and divers scour the waters near Beira, supported by aerial surveillance from helicopters. Maritime specialists emphasize the urgent need for more robust safety measures during offshore crew transfers, particularly in areas prone to unpredictable weather.
“The currents off Beira are notorious for being perilous,” noted a maritime safety expert. “Even seasoned crew can find themselves in peril when safety gear is not properly utilized. This incident serves as a harrowing reminder of the risks faced by seafarers daily.”
Meanwhile, Indian authorities are coordinating closely with the families of the victims and missing individuals, providing consular support and facilitating communication with relevant local officials. The High Commission confirmed that identification efforts for the deceased are in progress, and arrangements for repatriation will follow once formalities are completed.
As news of this tragic accident spreads, the families of those aboard are left anxiously waiting for updates. Many of the crew were employed by an international shipping company. “We are desperate for confirmation about our brother's fate,” expressed a relative of a missing crew member from Kerala. “Time feels like it’s standing still.”
The Indian government has been informed of the situation, with instructions issued to the High Commission to ensure that families receive timely updates. Local Mozambican authorities have promised full cooperation in ongoing rescue efforts.
This tragic boat capsizing has highlighted the increasingly dangerous conditions faced by Indian seafarers abroad. Thousands of Indians serve in the global maritime and shipping sectors, often under challenging conditions. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for improved safety protocols in sea operations.
As operations continue, expressions of hope and support are flooding in from across India and Mozambique. “We are praying for the safe return of those still missing,” stated the High Commission in their latest update. “We are dedicated to exhausting all efforts in this endeavor.”
