Forty-two migrants are feared dead after a rubber boat capsized near the Libyan coast, as reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Libyan authorities managed to rescue seven individuals who had drifted for six days following the incident close to the Al Buri oilfield.
The vessel, which was carrying 49 migrants, faced difficulties in the Mediterranean, drawing attention to the ongoing threats posed to those seeking perilous sea journeys. Survivors were found in a state of exhaustion, dehydration, and severe distress when they were finally rescued, where they received prompt medical assistance from the authorities.
“This heartbreaking event highlights the continual perils migrants face while attempting to reach Europe through Libya,” stated the IOM. “There is an urgent need for safe and legal migration routes to avert such tragedies and save lives.”
The rescue mission was carried out by units from the Libyan Coast Guard, who located the survivors after a prolonged period at sea. Search efforts for the missing persons continue, but hope is fading as time passes.
This incident exemplifies a broader humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean, where thousands of migrants risk their lives each year in search of refuge from conflicts, poverty, and unrest across Africa and the Middle East. International entities continue to urge nations to collaborate more effectively to ensure the safety of migrants and combat human trafficking.
The IOM urged the need for immediate measures like search-and-rescue operations and humanitarian assistance to alleviate further tragedies along these treacherous maritime routes.
