At least one police officer has been killed and several protesters injured as supporters of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) clashed with authorities in Lahore during an anti-Israel march. The violence erupted as demonstrators attempted to march toward the capital, Islamabad, on Monday.
Among the injured is TLP chief Saad Rizvi, who reportedly sustained multiple bullet wounds when police opened fire on the crowd. According to TLP sources, Rizvi is in critical condition. Unverified social media reports claiming his death have not been confirmed by credible sources.
Clash Details
The protests turned violent when demonstrators tried to remove shipping containers placed by police to block roads. Punjab Police Chief Usman Anwar confirmed that protesters fired at officers, resulting in the death of one police official and injuries to others. Police later arrested over 100 participants during demonstrations over the weekend.
Videos shared on social media show Rizvi urging authorities to stop firing and calling for negotiations, while gunfire could be heard in the background. Additional footage shows vehicles burning, including a truck carrying TLP workers leading the “long march” that began in eastern Pakistan on Friday.
Purpose of the Protest
The TLP-led march was intended as a pro-Palestinian rally outside the US Embassy in Islamabad. The party has previously organized pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Lahore and other Pakistani cities. The protest escalated as demonstrators resisted police barricades and tried to move toward the embassy.
Public Reaction and Government Response
The violent march has drawn mixed reactions. Some Pakistanis criticised the TLP for raising tensions after a ceasefire in Gaza, while others accused the government of overreacting by blocking major roads ahead of the protest.
Deputy Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry expressed confusion over the TLP’s choice of violence, saying it was inappropriate to turn the march into a confrontation instead of celebrating the Gaza ceasefire.

The Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) gained prominence in the 2018 elections by defending Pakistan’s blasphemy law. Since then, the party has organized violent rallies, particularly against perceived insults to Islam’s holy book, the Quran, both domestically and abroad.
This latest violent incident highlights the ongoing tension between political-religious groups and authorities in Pakistan, raising concerns over public safety and law enforcement measures during protests.
