The horror comedy Thamma, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, has crossed the ₹200 crore threshold globally in under three weeks since its release. This film forms part of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU) and now ranks as the 8th highest-grossing Indian film of 2025, ahead of Salman Khan’s Sikandar.
This triumph highlights the rising popularity of the horror-comedy genre within Indian cinema and illustrates the appeal of franchise-based narratives to local audiences.
Domestic Box Office Earnings
Maddock Films reports that in 20 days at Indian theaters, Thamma has garnered around ₹153.18 crore net (approximately ₹183.50 crore gross). While it continues to attract viewers, the daily earnings have tapered off to ₹1.50–2 crore, reflecting a typical decline for films entering their third screening week.
Despite this natural slowdown, the film's impressive start and steady audience attendance have fueled its swift rise on the charts.
Overseas Box Office Results
While international markets have not mirrored the enthusiasm seen domestically, Thamma has managed to secure over $2.5 million globally. This pushes the total worldwide gross to approximately ₹206 crore, though some industry watchers report a more conservative estimate of ₹185 crore.
The overseas earnings exhibit the niche appeal of Indian horror-comedies in markets abroad, where cultural nuances and humor may not resonate fully. Nonetheless, the star power of Khurrana and Mandanna has ensured a commendable overseas performance.
Comparative Performance and Franchise Implications
This year, Thamma has outperformed Sikandar, which amassed ₹177 crore, and has also exceeded the global box office of Stree (₹184 crore), making it the second-best in the MHCU franchise. The only title ahead is Stree 2, which achieved a remarkable ₹874 crore—an achievement that Thamma is unlikely to reach, yet it indicates the franchise's growing dominance.
The film underscores a strategic expansion within the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, solidifying its status as a beloved and profitable cinematic landscape.
About the Film: Summary and Cast
Helmed by Aditya Sarpotdar, Thamma presents a unique spin on vampire lore by blending it with elements of horror and comedy, captivating audiences with both suspense and laughter. The film boasts an impressive cast, including:
Ayushmann Khurrana
Rashmika Mandanna
Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Paresh Rawal
Additionally, Varun Dhawan makes a special appearance, reprising his character from Bhediya and Stree 2, creating additional crossover elements within the franchise's expansive narrative.
The Future of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe
Thamma also sets the stage for the next chapter in the MHCU, titled Shakti Shalini, featuring Aneet Padda from Saiyaara. The franchise currently has seven other films in the pipeline, including sequels to standalone features and a significant two-part crossover arriving in 2029, promising an extended universe for fans to follow.
The success of Thamma showcases the power of franchise storytelling in Indian cinema, especially when blending horror, comedy, and culturally resonant themes. Beyond its box office achievements exceeding ₹200 crore, Thamma has left a significant mark on the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, confirming its status as one of 2025's blockbuster hits, both commercially and culturally.
