Thailand Alert: Heavy Rain, Flash Floods and High Waves as Monsoon Grows

Thailand Alert: Heavy Rain, Flash Floods and High Waves as Monsoon Grows

Post by : Rameen Ariff

The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a new weather warning for Thursday, alerting people across the country about heavy rain, flash floods, and rough seas. The department explained that the monsoon trough is stretching from Myanmar and northern Thailand into a low-pressure area over northern Laos and northern Vietnam. At the same time, a moderate southwest monsoon is covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, bringing unstable weather to many regions.

Risk of Flooding and Overflow

According to the forecast, heavy rain is likely in many parts of Thailand. People living near rivers, canals, foothills, and low-lying areas are being urged to stay watchful, as the continuous downpour could cause flash floods, sudden water overflows, and mudslides. Authorities have asked local residents to keep an eye on weather updates and prepare for possible emergency situations.

High Waves in the Sea

The department also warned about strong winds and high waves. In the upper part of the Andaman Sea, waves could reach around 2 metres, while in the lower Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand, waves may rise between 1 and 2 metres. If thunderstorms occur, waves could grow even higher, crossing 2 metres. All fishing boats and small vessels are advised to be very careful and avoid sailing during thundershowers, while larger ships are asked to move with caution.

Weather Forecast for the Next 24 Hours

  • North: Many areas will face thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rainfall in provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, and Tak. Temperatures will be between 22-25°C at night and 29-32°C during the day.

  • Northeast: Widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are expected in Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani. Temperatures will stay between 22-25°C at night and 30-33°C during the day.

  • Central Region: Some provinces, especially Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Lopburi, and Saraburi, will experience scattered thunderstorms. Minimum temperatures will be 24-25°C, with daytime highs between 33-34°C.

  • East: Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat will see thunderstorms and heavy rain in some areas. Minimum temperatures will be around 24-26°C, while the maximum will be 31-34°C. Sea waves may reach 1-2 metres, and in thundershowers, waves could rise above 2 metres.

  • South (East Coast): Provinces like Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat will experience scattered thundershowers. The minimum temperature will be 22-24°C, and the maximum 31-35°C. Waves in the sea may be 1-2 metres high, but higher during storms.

  • South (West Coast): Ranong, Phang Nga, and Phuket are expected to see thunderstorms with heavy rain in some parts. Temperatures will range between 23-25°C at night and 30-33°C during the day. Sea waves may be about 2 metres high and higher during thunderstorms.

  • Bangkok and Nearby Areas: The capital city and surrounding provinces will face scattered thunderstorms. The temperature will be between 24-25°C at night and 33-34°C during the day.

Ongoing Storm Threats

The weather warning follows the weakening of Tropical Depression Kajiki earlier this week, which turned into a low-pressure system but still brought heavy rain to northern provinces. Even though Kajiki has faded, the department has cautioned that more rain is expected and a new storm may form soon, increasing the risk of flooding in several regions.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have asked people in all affected areas to stay alert, avoid risky areas near rivers or stormy seas, and follow safety instructions from local officials.
