A massive explosion tore through a military explosives plant in Hickman County, Tennessee, on Friday, leaving 19 people missing and several others dead, officials said. The cause of the blast remains unknown, and authorities warned that the investigation could take several days.
The explosion occurred at a facility operated by Accurate Energetic Systems, located in the Bucksnort area of Hickman County. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, searching through smoldering debris for any survivors. Aerial footage released by US media showed charred and mangled vehicles, along with scattered debris across the factory site.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis described the incident as “the most devastating scene that I’ve seen in my career” and confirmed that authorities are searching for 19 missing individuals. “There are fatalities. I don’t want to put a number to that yet, but we are looking for 19 souls,” he said.
The blast was so powerful that it was heard over a large distance, with debris scattered across half a square mile. Sheriff Davis said the building where the explosion occurred was completely destroyed, leaving “nothing to describe.”
Officials urged the public to avoid the area due to fears of secondary explosions, while Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said state agencies are working in partnership with local and federal authorities to manage the situation. On social media, he asked Tennesseans to pray for the families affected by the tragedy.
Accurate Energetic Systems, founded in 1980, is known for producing high explosives and specialty products for the US Department of Defense and industrial clients. The company recently received a $120 million Pentagon contract for the procurement of TNT. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Families of the missing face an agonizing wait as authorities continue to search the site for survivors. Sheriff Davis acknowledged the emotional toll on everyone involved, saying, “It’s hell on us. It’s hell on everybody involved.”
This incident marks one of the deadliest accidents at a US explosives facility in recent years and raises concerns about safety measures at plants handling high explosives. Authorities have vowed to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and prevent future tragedies.
