In a startling update, Mexican authorities have established that a 17-year-old, Victor Manuel Ubaldo, was the gunman who fatally shot Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo during a public Day of the Dead celebration in Michoacan on November 2.
Forensic evidence confirms that Ubaldo was directly involved in the attack, with officials indicating that he was shot dead by security forces who arrived at the scene. His family later identified his remains on Wednesday.
Prosecutor Carlos Torres revealed that comprehensive forensic evaluations, including the sodium rhodizonate test, affirmed Ubaldo’s role in the assassination of Mayor Manzo. “The examinations definitively proved that the teenager discharged the firearm used in the shooting,” Torres stated. He also mentioned that the suspect exhibited signs of methamphetamine consumption and had left his home just a week before the incident.
There are indications that other individuals may have conspired in the shooting, with investigations suggesting ties to organized crime networks active in the area. Michoacan has been notoriously affected by gang violence and cartel-related murders targeting political figures and public officials.
Experts express concern that Mexico’s criminal enterprises are increasingly enlisting younger individuals, often from impoverished backgrounds, to execute perilous tasks, including killings. A government report on cartel recruitment highlights that minors as young as six are being drawn into the organized crime realm, frequently through social media and online gaming.
Human rights advocates have raised alarms over the exploitation of at-risk youth, estimating nearly 200,000 minors nationwide could be vulnerable to recruitment by criminal organizations.
The shocking murder of Mayor Carlos Manzo underscores the rising violence in cartel-dominated areas and sheds light on the alarming trend of youth involvement in organized crime.
