Authorities in Sydney have arrested a Kazakh couple following the discovery of a sophisticated cheating scheme that allegedly garnered them over Rs 7 crore (A$1.2 million) at the Crown casino. The couple, 36-year-old Dilnoza Israilova and her 44-year-old spouse, Alisherykhoja Israilov, had only recently arrived in Australia and quickly made a name as high-rollers in the casino.
Their remarkable streak of wins raised suspicions, with the nail in the coffin being a hidden camera concealed within a Mickey Mouse T-shirt. Casino security became aware of the covert device during one of the couple's forays and promptly alerted the authorities.
Police soon arrived at the Barangaroo location to apprehend the couple. Investigators claim that the small camera was used to capture live footage of card tables and transmit it to the couple's mobile devices. Both wore disguised earpieces to facilitate real-time guidance on their betting activities.
A search of their possessions revealed further equipment associated with the cheating scheme, including magnetised probes, a phone mirror attachment, and various gambling tools. The T-shirt equipped with the camera is seen as crucial in relaying key visual information during multiple victorious outings.
Later, police raided their Sydney residence, confiscating additional gambling devices, expensive jewellery, and cash amounting to around Rs 2 lakh (2,000 euros). Authorities allege that the couple employed this technique across several visits, leading to unusually substantial earnings.
Both individuals have been charged with dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage and remain in police custody. Dilnoza is poised to return to court in February, while Alisherykhoja is set to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on December 11.
