Tensions have sharply risen in the occupied West Bank as a recent influx of violence initiated by Israeli settlers has targeted Palestinian farmland, a warehouse, and a Bedouin village on Tuesday. This aggression has resulted in injuries among Palestinians, particularly concerning given the timing with the annual olive harvest season.
United Nations reports from their humanitarian office indicate that October has witnessed the highest surge in settler violence in almost twenty years, mostly involving acts of vandalism, property destruction, and assaults on Palestinians and volunteers during the harvesting period.
Video footage captures masked settlers in the hillsides east of Tulkarm setting fire to a warehouse in Beit Lid and tents within the Bedouin village of Deir Sharaf. Palestinian Authority Minister Muayyad Shaaban characterized these aggressions as elements of a wider strategy intended to foster a “hostile atmosphere through intimidation and terror.”
In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intervened to quell the situation, detaining several Israeli civilians after settlers turned on soldiers. Israeli police have confirmed the arrest of four individuals linked to these incidents.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog denounced the violence as “shocking and serious,” warning that assaults against civilians and IDF members “cross a red line.” Major-General Avi Bluth, head of IDF Central Command, also criticized the actions, asserting they jeopardize regional security and require prompt action.
UN statistics reveal a dramatic escalation in attacks against settlers during the olive harvesting season, with over 260 incidents documented in October alone, averaging eight attacks per day. Approximately 150 of these incidents directly targeted olive harvesters, leading to injuries for more than 140 Palestinians and the destruction of over 4,200 trees and saplings across 77 villages. Since the beginning of the year, around 1,500 instances of settler violence have been reported.
The olive harvest is vital to the economic well-being of numerous Palestinian communities, lending even more significance to these violent acts. A report from Peace Now, an Israeli settlement watchdog, indicates that West Bank settlements are growing swiftly, with approvals for 5,667 new housing units scheduled for 2025 to accommodate near 25,000 residents. The pro-settler Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has been active in promoting settlement development and land appropriation efforts in the West Bank, stifling the feasibility of a future Palestinian state.
The violence has resulted in civilian casualties, highlighted by the funeral for 13-year-old Aysam Mualla in Beita near Nablus, who succumbed to injuries suffered from tear gas deployed by the IDF while he was gathering olives near a settler outpost last month.
This recent wave of violence accentuates the persistent humanitarian and security challenges within the West Bank, as clashes between settlers and Palestinians, alongside assisting volunteers, continue during this critical harvest period. The international community is urging accountability and more robust measures to safeguard civilians and curb future violent episodes.
