China Sprint Legend Su Bingtian Retired After Historic Asian Records

Post by : Rameen Ariff

China’s sprinting legend Su Bingtian, widely celebrated as Asia’s fastest man, announced his retirement from athletics on Tuesday, bringing an end to an illustrious career that reshaped Chinese track and field. Su, born in 1989, carved his name into sporting history as the first Chinese sprinter to break the 10-second barrier, clocking 9.99 seconds at the Diamond League event in Eugene, USA, in 2015. His groundbreaking performances continued over the years, culminating in a remarkable achievement at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, where he became the first Chinese man to reach the 100m final. There, he set a new Asian record of 9.83 seconds in the semifinal and finished sixth in the final, cementing his status as one of the continent’s all-time sprinting greats.

In addition to his individual feats, Su played a pivotal role in China’s 4x100m relay team, helping secure a bronze medal on the Olympic stage. He had previously equaled the Asian record of 9.91 seconds at the World Challenge in Madrid in 2018, consistently pushing the boundaries of sprinting excellence in Asia. Su Bingtian’s retirement marks the end of a career defined by speed, resilience, and historic firsts, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire a new generation of sprinters across China and the world.

This announcement has resonated across the sports community, highlighting Su’s contributions to athletics and celebrating his pioneering role in breaking barriers for Asian sprinters. His journey from breaking the 10-second mark to standing on the Olympic stage remains a milestone in Asian sports history, making him an enduring figure in the story of global athletics.
