Sri Lanka has begun transferring more than 200 sailors from an Iranian naval logistics vessel to shore after the ship requested assistance while positioned near the country’s waters. The Sri Lanka Navy confirmed that the crew members from the vessel IRIS Bushehr are being brought to the port of Colombo, where they will undergo medical examinations and immigration procedures.
According to Sri Lanka Navy spokesperson Commander Buddhika Sampath, the sailors will be temporarily housed at the Welisara naval base, located about 20 kilometers north of Colombo. The transfer is being carried out in phases while Sri Lankan authorities coordinate the movement of the vessel itself to the eastern port of Trincomalee for further inspection and technical support.
Officials said the situation began after one of the ship’s engines reportedly malfunctioned, forcing the vessel to request assistance while operating near Sri Lankan waters. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the government decided to allow the vessel into Sri Lanka’s port after consultations with Iranian authorities and the ship’s captain, emphasizing that the move follows international maritime conventions governing distress situations at sea.
The incident comes during heightened regional tensions involving Iran and Western powers. Earlier reports indicated that an Iranian naval vessel had been sunk during a confrontation at sea, increasing security concerns across the Indian Ocean region. Sri Lankan authorities, however, stressed that their response is purely humanitarian and focused on ensuring the safety of the crew members.
Former Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary H. M. G. S. Palihakkara said international maritime law obligates countries to respond when vessels issue distress signals at sea. He noted that Sri Lanka acted responsibly by providing assistance and medical support to the sailors.
Sri Lanka has also reiterated its long-standing policy of neutrality in global conflicts. Government officials said a number of Iranian sailors will remain on the vessel to assist Sri Lankan naval officers as it is navigated toward Trincomalee, while the remaining crew members will stay at a naval base until the situation is resolved.
The episode highlights how rising geopolitical tensions are increasingly affecting the Indian Ocean region, placing countries like Sri Lanka in a delicate position as they balance humanitarian responsibilities with diplomatic neutrality.
