Colombo: Sri Lanka is facing one of its worst weather emergencies this year as floods and landslides continue to devastate several districts, raising the death toll to 56 and damaging more than 600 houses, officials said on Friday.
The country has been struggling with severe weather conditions since last week, but the situation became far worse on Thursday when continuous heavy rains triggered floods and landslides across multiple regions. Homes, farmlands, and major roads were submerged, causing widespread disruption.
The central mountainous areas of Badulla and Nuwara Eliya, known for their tea estates, were among the worst affected.
More than 25 people were killed in landslides in these districts, located nearly 300 kilometers (186 miles) east of Colombo.
The country’s disaster management center reported that 21 people are still missing, while 14 others were injured in landslides and collapsing slopes in the hill country.
Deaths from landslides were also reported in other parts of Sri Lanka as the rainfall intensified.
With weather conditions worsening, the government announced the closure of all government offices and schools on Friday to ensure public safety.
Authorities said reservoirs and rivers have overflowed, forcing the closure of several main roads. The rising water levels blocked routes with mud, rocks, and fallen trees.
Passenger train services were halted in many areas after flooded tracks, mudslides, and debris made travel unsafe. Roads connecting several towns were also closed due to landslides and flooding.
Local television channels aired dramatic visuals of Sri Lanka’s armed forces rushing to rescue stranded residents.
An air force helicopter was seen lifting three people from the roof of a house surrounded by rising floodwaters.
Footage also showed a car swept away by powerful currents near the eastern town of Ampara, leaving three passengers dead.
The ongoing Sri Lanka floods and Sri Lanka landslides have renewed concerns about the island nation’s vulnerability to climate-related disasters. Meteorologists warn that more heavy rain is likely in the coming days, urging residents in high-risk zones to remain alert.
