The United States reported the fruitful conclusion of two days of negotiations between Lebanon and Israel at the US Department of State, characterizing the discussions as “extremely productive.”
In a statement released by the Department of State on Friday, it was revealed that both nations established a new framework for negotiations aimed at fostering enduring peace and stability. This framework emphasizes mutual respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and enhancing security along their shared border.
The talks made significant strides in the political sphere, with further gatherings scheduled for June 2 and June 3.
Additionally, Lebanon and Israel agreed to prolong the cessation of hostilities established on April 16 by 45 more days. This extension aims to bolster ongoing improvements in security coordination and communication.
The statement also mentioned that discussions concerning security will be initiated later this month at the US Department of Defense, also known as the Pentagon. Military representatives from both Lebanon and Israel are expected to engage under US facilitation to enhance communication and coordination mechanisms.
The US further voiced its worries regarding Hezbollah’s persistent attacks against Israel, noting that these actions occurred without the Lebanese government's endorsement. Washington warned that such hostilities pose risks to ongoing diplomatic efforts and may jeopardize the political framework.
Despite these hurdles, the US acknowledged the willingness displayed by Lebanon and Israel to persist in their pursuit of a long-term resolution. The statement reaffirmed that Washington will continue to provide support to both countries concerning political and security matters in the upcoming negotiation phase.
