Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and her husband, entrepreneur Raj Kundra, have approached the Bombay High Court aiming to annul a Rs 60 crore cheating case. This case, launched by the Economic Offences Wing of Mumbai Police, has resulted in the couple seeking a halt on any coercive measures from police during the ongoing review.
Upcoming Court Proceedings
The hearing took place on Monday under the guidance of Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekar alongside Justice Gautam Ankhad. The bench directed the couple to share their petition's details with complainant Deepak Kothari, setting the next court appearance for November 20.
Details of the Allegations
Kothari alleges that from 2015 to 2023, the couple convinced him to invest Rs 60 crore in their venture, Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd, which he claims was misappropriated for personal gains.
Defensive Stance
Shilpa and Raj maintain that the FIR is rooted in misrepresentation and was filed with malicious intent aimed at extortion. They emphasize that Shilpa's involvement with the company was limited and that the situation stems from a failed business investment rather than criminal intent.
Highlighting unforeseen economic challenges, including the impact of the November 2016 demonetisation on cash-reliant businesses, they argue that their financial downturn was a business risk. The couple has implored the Bombay High Court to annul the FIR and prevent any police action until their case is comprehensively reviewed, firmly asserting their lack of involvement in any fraudulent conduct.
