Former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan has revealed his heartfelt plan to conclude his illustrious international career on home soil. The 38-year-old all-rounder, widely regarded as Bangladesh’s greatest cricketer, expressed his desire to play a full series in all three formats – Test, One Day International, and T20 – before officially retiring from international cricket.
Shakib, who had been a prominent member of parliament for the Awami League under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, left Bangladesh following the political upheaval and the toppling of Hasina’s government last year. Despite the political turmoil and safety concerns, he emphasized that he has not retired from all formats and still dreams of a proper farewell in front of his home fans.
Speaking on the “Beard Before Wicket” podcast, Shakib said, “I am officially not retired from all formats. My plan is to go back to Bangladesh, play one full series of ODI, Test, and T20, and retire. I want to finish my international career by playing a complete series in each format.”
The cricket legend has not played for Bangladesh since his 71st Test match against India last year, after which he stepped away from T20 Internationals. He had previously requested a farewell Test series in Bangladesh during the series against South Africa, but the interim government could not guarantee his security due to his political involvement.
In the meantime, Shakib has continued playing franchise cricket across global T20 leagues, keeping himself active and hopeful of returning to represent Bangladesh. “I am hopeful. That’s why I’m playing T20 leagues. I think it will happen,” he added, highlighting his determination to end his career in the country where he built his cricketing legacy.
