Russia has issued a strong warning to South Korea, cautioning that any decision to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine could trigger retaliatory measures and significantly damage bilateral relations. The statement was made by Andrey Rudenko in an interview with TASS.
Rudenko emphasized that Moscow has repeatedly conveyed its position to South Korea through diplomatic channels, opposing both direct and indirect involvement in supplying arms to Ukraine. He specifically referred to the U.S.-led initiative known as the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List, which coordinates weapons support for Kyiv.
The warning comes as reports suggest that Seoul is considering participation in the framework. Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine War, South Korea has limited its assistance to humanitarian aid and non-lethal supplies, maintaining a cautious stance to avoid escalating tensions with Moscow.
Russian officials have indicated that any shift in this policy could lead to “serious consequences,” potentially affecting diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries. The remarks also follow earlier warnings from Russia’s foreign ministry, signaling a consistent stance against expanding international military support for Ukraine.
In the same interview, Rudenko also warned that Russia would take “adequate countermeasures” if Japan were to pose security threats near its Far East borders, highlighting broader regional tensions amid the ongoing conflict.
The development underscores the growing geopolitical pressure surrounding the Ukraine war, as countries weigh their roles in international security alliances while balancing diplomatic relationships with major powers.
