Russia and China have vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, dealing a setback to global efforts to restore free navigation through the critical waterway. The resolution had been repeatedly diluted in hopes of avoiding a veto.
The vote ended 11-2, with two abstentions, reflecting divisions within the council. The proposal sought to ensure safe maritime transit as tensions in the region escalated, especially after warnings from Donald Trump over Iran’s control of the strait. Nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil passes through this route, making it vital to global energy markets.
Both Russia and China defended their decision, arguing that the resolution could be misused to justify further military action. They warned that the proposal failed to address the root causes of the conflict and might escalate tensions by giving broad powers for intervention under the guise of protecting navigation.
Following the veto, the two nations introduced an alternative draft urging an immediate halt to military activities and condemning attacks on civilians and infrastructure. Meanwhile, Gulf nations expressed concern over the inaction, stressing the need to safeguard international shipping routes and maintain stability in global trade.
