Veteran actress Roopa Ganguly, famed for her iconic role as Draupadi in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat (1988-1990), paid a heartfelt tribute to her late co-star Pankaj Dheer, who passed away at the age of 68 after battling cancer. Roopa Ganguly shared her shock at the news, revealing that she had no idea about Pankaj Dheer’s declining health. The two actors had kept in touch intermittently through messages, despite having last met years ago.
Recalling their time on the set of Mahabharat, Roopa Ganguly described Pankaj Dheer as “the most handsome man on the set after Nitish Bharadwaj” and praised his reserved and gentle personality. She said, “Pankaj Dheer was a very well-mannered, soft-spoken gentleman. Unlike Puneet Issar and Firoz Khan, he was always reserved, yet his presence was commanding.” Roopa Ganguly fondly remembered sending texts to Pankaj, calling him her “most handsome friend,” which highlighted the warmth of their friendship.
Pankaj Dheer’s passing marks the end of an era for Indian television. Known widely for his portrayal of Karna in Mahabharat, he also played King Shivdutt in the fantasy series Chandrakanta. Over his career, Pankaj Dheer appeared in several notable films, including Sadak, Sanam Bewafa, Aashik Awara, Soldier, Baadshah, Andaz, Zameen, and Tarzan. His versatile performances in both television and cinema earned him widespread admiration.
The funeral rites for Pankaj Dheer were held at Pawan Hans crematorium, attended by industry stalwarts including Salman Khan, Sidharth Malhotra, Arbaaz Khan, Puneet Issar, and Mika Singh. He is survived by his wife, Anita Dheer, and son, Nikitin Dheer, who continues to act in Indian cinema. Roopa Ganguly expressed her condolences to the family, highlighting the emotional loss for his colleagues and fans alike.
Reflecting on Pankaj Dheer’s legacy, Roopa Ganguly emphasized his professionalism and the mark he left on Indian television history. She noted that despite the fame, Pankaj remained humble and dedicated to his craft. Fans and actors alike mourn his passing, remembering him not just for his on-screen charisma but also for his off-screen integrity and kindness.
The demise of Pankaj Dheer has reignited discussions about his contribution to Indian television and cinema, particularly his unforgettable portrayal of Karna, which remains etched in the memories of millions. Roopa Ganguly’s tribute, shared with emotion and respect, serves as a poignant reminder of his impact on the entertainment industry.
