Rishabh Pant to Lead India as Shubman Gill Misses Second Test

Rishabh Pant to Lead India as Shubman Gill Misses Second Test

Post by : Maya Rahman

India will face South Africa in the second Test in Guwahati without their prime opener and captain, Shubman Gill. The 26-year-old Gill suffered a neck injury during the first Test in Kolkata while batting on Day 2, retiring hurt after playing a sweep shot. After being hospitalized for scans, he traveled with the team but hasn't regained fitness to play in Guwahati.

In his absence, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant is set to take the reins as captain. Renowned for his aggressive batting and strong leadership, Pant will guide the team in this critical match. Sai Sudharsan is anticipated to fill Gill's spot in the lineup, enhancing the batting order. Having made his Test debut in England last June, the 24-year-old Sudharsan has played five Tests, accumulating 273 runs with an average of 30.33, and is regarded as capable of thriving in the high-pressure landscape of a decisive match.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed Gill is responding positively to treatment and is undergoing rehab. However, the demands of a five-day match render it too risky for him to play. His recovery could take another week to ten days, casting doubt on his participation in the upcoming ODI series set to begin on November 30 in Ranchi. He may be available for the T20 fixtures, but care is essential to avoid further injury complications.

The Indian team, which includes Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel, Akash Deep, Ravindra Jadeja, and Devdutt Padikkal, held an optional practice session at Eden Gardens prior to their travel to Assam. Nitish Kumar Reddy has also been added to the squad to prepare for the expected turn and bounce at the red-soil Guwahati pitch.

This second Test is historic as it marks the inaugural Test match at the venue. The match will commence daily at 9 a.m., with a unique feature of taking the tea break before lunch, a first in Test cricket's history. India is currently trailing the series 0-1, making Pant's leadership and team performance critical for equalizing the series. Fans and cricket analysts alike will be keenly observing how the young members of the squad perform in this significant battle.
