Renee Zellweger Celebrates Bridget Jones with Statue Unveiling

Renee Zellweger Celebrates Bridget Jones with Statue Unveiling

Post by : Meena Ariff

Renowned actress Renee Zellweger, celebrated for her role as Bridget Jones in the beloved film series, attended a special ceremony on Monday where a statue was unveiled in Leicester Square. This occasion marked a milestone as it highlighted 25 years since the release of Bridget Jones's Diary. The event underscored the character's significant cultural influence and her cherished place in cinema.

“It's a bit surreal. One doesn’t really expect something like this... it’s quite unexpected,” Zellweger remarked to the media during the statue unveiling.

The statue portrays Bridget Jones with her hair pulled back, dressed in a mini skirt, while holding a pen and diary—an instantly recognizable representation for fans. Zellweger noted the likeness, stating, “She’s absolutely adorable... very cute. Looks just like Bridget to me.”

Bridget Jones was brought to life by author Helen Fielding over three decades ago in a newspaper column that documented her love life and struggles. Fielding's debut novel, Bridget Jones's Diary, released in 1996, quickly achieved bestseller status, followed by three more novels that continued to delve into Bridget's romantic and professional journeys.

The 2001 film adaptation featured Zellweger alongside Hugh Grant and Colin Firth, becoming an immediate success. The narrative evolved with sequels like Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004), Bridget Jones's Baby (2016), and the upcoming Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025).

Fielding expressed her gratitude towards Bridget's lasting relevance, saying, “It’s wonderful that my daughter's generation enjoys Bridget, which is rare. I feel incredibly fortunate and proud of her.”

The newly unveiled Bridget Jones statue joins the Scenes in the Square trail, which features life-sized sculptures of iconic film characters in Leicester Square, a renowned venue for movie premieres and events. Established in 2020, the trail includes figures of other cinematic legends such as Laurel and Hardy and Batman.

This initiative aims to honor characters that have significantly influenced popular culture and inspired countless movie enthusiasts. The addition of Bridget Jones commemorates her 25-year legacy while reaffirming the films' popularity among both longtime fans and new viewers.

Bridget Jones stands as a relatable and enduring figure in modern pop culture. Through her humorous and candid storytelling, along with her memorable life experiences, she has connected deeply with audiences over the years. The statue not only celebrates this legacy but also signifies the enduring impact of Fielding’s creation, Zellweger’s remarkable performance, and the films that brought Bridget's story to the silver screen.
