Lost Rubens Crucifixion Artwork Resurfaces and Sells in Paris

Lost Rubens Crucifixion Artwork Resurfaces and Sells in Paris

Post by : Badri Ariffin

An astonishing artwork that disappeared from the public for over 400 years has taken the art community by surprise. A long-lost painting by Baroque genius Peter Paul Rubens was recently uncovered in a private residence in Paris and sold for €2.3 million at a Sunday auction in Versailles.

The unexpected discovery began when auctioneer Jean-Pierre Osenat noticed the artwork—previously dismissed as a mere workshop piece with a modest valuation of around €10,000. This painting, illustrating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, belonged to a French family that had guarded it for generations. What first appeared to be an unremarkable piece soon unveiled hints of a vastly significant origin.

Through rigorous scientific testing, the painting was confirmed as an authentic Rubens. Microscopic examinations revealed the unmistakable style of the master: layers of white, red, black, and delicate hints of blue and green pigments employed to depict lifelike human skin. These observations correspond with Rubens’ artistic methods from the early 1600s.

Enhancing the marvel of this discovery is the artwork's subject matter. While Rubens depicted various crucifixions, this piece is distinguished by its stark and visceral representation of Christ’s body. It is believed to be the only documented Rubens painting that illustrates the moment blood and water flow from Christ’s side—an interpretation the artist never replicated.

The painting's intriguing history further adds to its allure. After nearly vanishing in the 17th century, it only resurfaced in the 1800s within the collection of notable French artist William Bouguereau, before again fading into private ownership.

Its resurgence has sparked a wave of excitement among collectors and art scholars, culminating in a bustling auction environment where this previously overlooked canvas fetched a multimillion-euro bid. From being undervalued to a momentous revelation, this painting’s saga represents one of the most remarkable art rediscoveries in recent history.
