Ashwin Slams England's Careless Display Following Ashes Defeat

Ashwin Slams England's Careless Display Following Ashes Defeat

Post by : Maya Rahman

Former Indian spinner R Ashwin has taken aim at England for their dismal showing in the opening Test of the 2025 Ashes series against Australia in Perth. Concluding in under two days, Australia secured a decisive victory by eight wickets, with England’s batting faltering in both innings, failing to surpass 200 runs. Not one English batter managed to remain at the crease for longer than 61 balls. Ashwin described their approach as extremely careless, falling short of the standards expected in Test cricket.

Ashwin specifically criticized England’s aggressive playstyle, known as Bazball. He remarked that the players were making unwarranted risks without considering the match context. He noted that their offensive tactics resembled “reckless cricket” rather than intelligent batting. He expressed that characterizing their gameplay as reckless might even be an understatement, given their repetitive errors in the face of lost wickets.

In a discussion on his YouTube channel, Ashwin pointed out that many young players take significant risks even when fielders are on the boundary. This trend is not exclusive to England, as he mentioned that some young Indian players sometimes attempt lofted shots at inopportune moments. He questioned how a team could persist with aggressive shots without discernment, especially after being bowled out for only 172 runs on the Test's first day.

Ashwin also highlighted that England squandered a crucial chance. After the bowlers' successful efforts yielded a 40-run lead, the batters should have displayed more responsibility. He emphasized the primary role of a batting unit is to ensure bowlers receive adequate rest to be ready for future innings. He recalled how India’s coach, Rahul Dravid, often advises players to provide bowlers with proper downtime. Instead, England’s batting lineup collapsed again swiftly, forcing their bowlers back into action far too soon.

After being bowled out cheaply for the second time, Australia only required around 200 runs to clinch the win—a minimal target in Test cricket. Ashwin remarked that England's bowlers wished for rest but had to return immediately to the field due to irresponsible batting choices, adding undue pressure on them and amplifying the disappointment of the loss.

In response to former England captain Michael Vaughan, who stated England knows how to bounce back, Ashwin expressed hope for their quick recovery. He cautioned, however, that if their batting issues persist, the Ashes tour could become an arduous journey for them.

Ashwin also touched on the limitations of the modern, fearless batting style. While recognizing that risk-taking is part of the game, a team must discern when to attack and when to defend. He criticized England for maintaining a uniform approach in all scenarios without adapting to the playing conditions. Asserting that Test cricket demands patience, awareness, and maturity, he lamented England’s lack of these qualities during the first match.

Australia’s commanding victory has given them a 1-0 lead in the Ashes series. Their bowlers adeptly capitalized on the conditions, while their batters pursued the modest target with ease. Meanwhile, England has several issues to address prior to the next Test. Ashwin’s critiques highlight deep concerns shared by many former players regarding England’s Bazball method when faced with intense pressure.
