The celebrated zardozi gown worn by the late Queen Elizabeth II during her 1961 visit to India is now a standout feature at a significant royal exhibition in the UK. Titled “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style”, the exhibition is being held at Buckingham Palace’s King’s Gallery and showcases the fashion legacy of the late monarch over her lengthy reign. This gown has garnered considerable public interest due to its profound connection with India and exquisite traditional embroidery.
Specifically crafted by esteemed royal designer Norman Hartnell for a state dinner hosted by then President Dr Rajendra Prasad in New Delhi, the evening gown showcases intricate zardozi embroidery using metallic threads. Notably, it encompasses lotus flower designs — a symbol of India’s national identity. Curators of the exhibition emphasized the gown was thoughtfully designed to honor Indian culture and traditions during such a pivotal diplomatic visit.
This silk gown is adorned with lace, pearl beads, sequins, and crystals, exemplifying the high level of craftsmanship characteristic of royal fashion in that era. Originally, the dress featured a flowing train cascading from the Queen’s shoulders, but was later updated with a short bolero jacket for versatility at less formal royal events. Fashion experts highlight the gown as representative of how royal attire was often employed to foster diplomatic relations through cultural symbols and thoughtful design choices.
The exhibition highlights how Queen Elizabeth II utilized fashion during her overseas engagements. Organizers noted that many outfits reflect colors, patterns, and motifs relevant to the nations she visited. Another gown from the same 1961 Commonwealth tour incorporates Pakistan’s national colors, illustrating how royal fashion acted as a subtle diplomatic instrument during international excursions.
The India tour was historically significant as it marked the first visit by a reigning British monarch to India post-independence. During this visit, Queen Elizabeth II was the guest of honor at India’s Republic Day celebrations. The exhibition offers a detailed exploration of how royal fashion mirrored the political and cultural relationships of that time.
The “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style” exhibition features more than 300 garments, accessories, sketches, and personalized fashion items from various stages of the Queen’s life. A number of these pieces are publicly showcased for the first time. Curators aim to exemplify the Queen’s active role in selecting and crafting her wardrobe throughout the decades. The exhibition will remain in London until October 2026, drawing thousands of visitors from around the globe.
