In an effort to tackle the pressing issue of affordable housing, the governments of Canada and Quebec have unveiled plans to construct 77 new housing units across three communities. This initiative was confirmed by Gregor Robertson alongside officials from the Quebec government, showcasing a united endeavor to bolster housing supply for vulnerable demographics.
These new housing units are part of a larger collaboration detailed in a Memorandum of Understanding between the two governments, which seeks to expedite residential construction within Quebec. To date, officials have indicated support for nearly 865 affordable housing units under this partnership, involving a significant investment of around $200 million.
The planned projects will cater to specific groups, including independent seniors, those facing social or economic hardships, and women and children affected by domestic abuse. The estimated cost for these projects is over $37 million, underscoring the commitment from federal, provincial, and local partners.
One notable project is being developed by Coopérative de solidarité Au cœur des Collines located in Saint-Calixte, which will create 28 units specifically for independent seniors. Another significant initiative, the Collectif Amélie Fristel project in Joliette, is set to produce 38 units, providing both permanent and transitional housing for individuals with disabilities and those experiencing homelessness.
A further project, managed by Maison d’Ariane, aims to deliver 11 housing units tailored for women and children who are survivors of domestic violence, creating a safe haven for residents to begin anew.
Funding for these projects comes from both federal and provincial sources, through avenues like the Quebec Affordable Housing Program and Build Canada Homes. Community organizations are pivotal in implementing these initiatives, ensuring that local needs are prioritized.
Officials are optimistic that this initiative will considerably enhance access to safe, affordable housing while also fortifying communities by aiding those most in need. This partnership represents a collaborative strategy aimed at addressing housing challenges and fostering inclusive, sustainable development across Quebec.
