As the Islamic Solidarity Games progress in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Qatar has enhanced its medal tally by winning two bronze medals in fencing and wrestling. Running until 21st November, the Games host over 3,000 athletes from 57 nations, celebrating sportsmanship and unity in the Islamic community.
Khalid Al Yafei contributed the first bronze for Qatar in the men’s foil fencing event, displaying exceptional skill and determination against formidable opponents. His achievement underscores Qatar's rising presence in fencing, highlighting its commitment to individual sports.
The second bronze was earned by wrestler Shaheen Mohammad in the 77kg category. His hard-fought matches demonstrated significant skill and endurance, marking a milestone for Qatar's wrestling squad as they cultivate competitive athletes on international stages.
With these latest medals, Qatar has amassed a total of seven, comprising three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals. This strong showing confirms Qatar's competitive edge across various sports.
In handball, Qatar's national team maintained its flawless record by overwhelming the Maldives with a score of 44-6. This dominant win allowed them to top Group A, securing victories against Iran (39-23) and the UAE (41-24) previously.
Moving into the semifinals, Qatar will face Bahrain, the runner-up from Group B. The other semifinal match will see Saudi Arabia, the top Group B team, go up against the UAE, which secured second place in Group A. Qatar is focused on defending its gold medal earned in the last edition held in Konya, Türkiye, in 2022.
The nation also highlighted its prowess in camel racing, with athlete Hazem Abdullah Al Nudailah qualifying for the men’s 2000-meter final after securing second place in his heat at the renowned Al-Janadriyah Racecourse. The final race is set for Wednesday.
In athletics, Qatari runner Abubaker Haidar successfully advanced to the 800-meter final, clocking an impressive 1:50.09 in his heat. He is now poised to compete for yet another medal for Qatar.
Shot put thrower Ahmed Jibril finished fourth in the men’s shot put competition with a throw of 18.51 meters. While he narrowly missed out on a medal, his strong showing was commendable against tough contenders.
The impressive performances by Qatari athletes so far reflect their dedication, teamwork, and spirited competition at the Islamic Solidarity Games. As more events approach, the nation is eager to expand its medal collection, showcasing its ongoing commitment to sporting excellence.
