Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) delivered a stunning performance in the Champions League on Tuesday, thrashing Bayer Leverkusen 7-2 in a rollercoaster first-half display that left fans and pundits in awe. PSG’s relentless attack, highlighted by Desire Doue’s brace and Ousmane Dembele’s goal in his comeback, extended their winning streak in the competition to six matches, equalling the club’s record. With this victory, PSG tops the Champions League group stage table with a perfect nine points after three matches, asserting themselves as serious contenders this season.
The match began explosively, with PSG taking an early lead in the seventh minute through a precise header by Willian Pacho. Leverkusen, caught off guard from the start, were unable to respond effectively. A potential equalizer came when Alejandro Grimaldo earned a penalty in the 25th minute, but his shot rattled the post. The tension intensified when Leverkusen captain Robert Andrich was sent off for an elbow on Desire Doue in the 32nd minute, reducing the hosts to ten men. Moments later, PSG also went down to ten men after Illia Zabarnyi fouled Christian Kofane, leading to another spot-kick converted by Aleix Garcia.
Despite Leverkusen briefly equalizing, PSG’s firepower proved unstoppable. Desire Doue struck again to regain the lead, followed by a pinpoint finish from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia just before halftime. Doue’s second goal further demoralized Leverkusen, who were already struggling with defensive gaps caused by the sending-off. PSG’s relentless pressure continued into the second half, with Nuno Mendes scoring in the 50th minute. Aleix Garcia pulled one back for the hosts in the 54th, but PSG’s dominance was unchallenged as Dembele scored in the 66th minute shortly after coming on, and Vitinha sealed the emphatic 7-2 victory in stoppage time.
PSG coach Luis Enrique praised his team’s effort, stating, “The feeling is very positive because we played very well. We had clear chances and deserved the victory.” Enrique highlighted the unusual dynamics of playing ten against ten, noting the team’s discipline and tactical execution under pressure. The Champions League win not only boosted PSG’s confidence but also showcased their depth and attacking prowess, signaling a strong campaign ahead.
On the other hand, Leverkusen coach Kasper Hjulmand expressed disappointment, saying, “We are feeling a lot of pain right now. The decisive minutes were those seven minutes. Going from 1-1 to 4-1 in such a short period made the difference. It’s not a good feeling professionally.” Leverkusen, struggling in the group stage with only two points from three matches, now face an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stages. Their next match is against Benfica on November 5, following PSG’s home clash with Bayern Munich.
With a clinical display of attacking football, PSG demonstrated why they remain one of Europe’s most formidable teams. Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia stood out, ensuring that PSG not only secured a record-equalling sixth consecutive Champions League win but also sent a strong message to their rivals about their ambitions this season. Fans around the world witnessed a masterclass in teamwork, skill, and resilience from the French champions.
