Rio de Janeiro hosted a high-profile ceremony on Wednesday where Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, voiced cautious optimism about tackling urgent environmental problems at the fifth edition of the EarthShot Prize. The appearance is his first formal visit to Latin America and takes place just days before Brazil welcomes the UN climate summit COP30.
Launched in 2020 after William's visit to Namibia, the EarthShot Prize is a decade-long programme designed to accelerate breakthrough environmental innovations. Modeled on the ambition of JFK’s “moonshot,” the initiative awards five winners £1 million each to scale projects addressing climate change, pollution, biodiversity decline and related ecological threats.
At the event, William recognised the scale of the challenge while urging persistence. “I understand that some might feel discouraged in these uncertain times,” he said. “I understand that there is still so much to be done. But this is no time for complacency, and the optimism I felt in 2020 remains ardent today.”
The ceremony drew a wide roster of artists and public figures, among them Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes, Brazilian talents Gilberto Gil, Seu Jorge and Anitta, and ex-Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and London Mayor Sadiq Khan also attended, underscoring international backing for the cause.
William’s visit underscores his expanding role in environmental advocacy. Alongside the awards, he unveiled new measures to support Indigenous groups and environmental defenders, and visited notable Rio landmarks to observe conservation projects up close.
Now at the halfway point of its ten-year plan, the EarthShot Prize seeks to inspire practical, scalable solutions worldwide. William will continue his climate-focused engagements at COP30, representing King Charles and reaffirming the UK’s commitment to global sustainability efforts.
Through efforts such as the EarthShot Prize, Prince William aims to raise awareness, encourage innovation and sustain international momentum toward a greener future.
