Beirut is preparing for a monumental event as over 120,000 individuals are expected to gather for Pope Leo XIV’s mass on Tuesday, the highlight of his remarkable visit to Lebanon. His presence comes as a much-needed source of hope for a nation still healing from the wounds of conflict, economic distress, and the memory of the catastrophic 2020 port explosion.
The pontiff arrived in Beirut on Sunday from Turkey, marking his inaugural international journey as pope. His messages throughout the visit focus on resilience, unity, and motivating Lebanon’s youth, many of whom face a disheartening future.
This visit has provided an emotional uplift for many in Beirut. “It has brought a smile back to our faces,” expressed Yasmine Chidiac, one of those eagerly awaiting a glimpse of the pope on Monday.
Mass in a Secure Setting
The grand open-air mass will take place near Beirut’s scenic waterfront, with registrations surpassing initial projections. Authorities have implemented stringent security measures, blocking off significant areas of central Beirut starting Monday evening and establishing checkpoints in neighboring districts.
A Reflective Moment at the Blast Site
Before the mass, Pope Leo XIV will visit the port, site of one of the largest contemporary non-nuclear explosions. The August 4, 2020 event resulted in the loss of over 220 lives and significant destruction throughout the city. Despite years of warnings about the ammonium nitrate stored there, the inquiry into the incident remains stagnant due to political obstacles.
At the port, the pope will silently pray and meet with the families of victims and survivors, many of whom continue to seek answers five years later.
Papal Outreach and Youth Engagement
Earlier on Monday, the pontiff visited a psychiatric facility run by nuns in Beirut, engaging with staff and residents in a meaningful encounter that deeply resonated with the community.
In Bkerke, the headquarters of the Maronite church, he received a warm welcome from thousands of young Lebanese, who greeted him as a global icon. Speaking before around 15,000 youths, he encouraged them to direct their energy toward revitalizing their country. “You possess the enthusiasm to transform history,” he declared, prompting enthusiastic applause.
A Journey of Renewal for a Worn Nation
Pope Leo XIV’s tour of Lebanon, featuring interfaith dialogues and spontaneous interactions with the public, has transcended political divides and eased fears of potential conflict with Israel. For many, this brief moment of solidarity and hope is a refreshing change.
As Beirut gears up for the significant gathering on Tuesday, the city finds itself at the intersection of sorrow, faith, and renewed optimism — with the pope's presence offering thousands a reason to look ahead with hope.
