IZNIK, TURKEY — In a touching and historic gathering, Pope Leo XIV convened with Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I and various Christian leaders on Friday by Lake Iznik, marking the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. This significant event celebrated the foundational Nicaean Creed developed in 325 A.D., showcasing the unity shared among Christian denominations.
The pontiff arrived via helicopter from Istanbul, welcomed by the echo of a nearby mosque's call to prayer, which emphasized the unique interfaith nature of the occasion. Leaders from various branches—including Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, Coptic, Armenian, Syrian, and Anglican churches—offered prayers over the recently revealed stone foundations of the Basilica of Saint Neophytos, believed to be the council's original location.
A Unified Prayer
The ceremony featured a blend of liturgical hymns from both Catholic and Orthodox traditions, creating a contemplative atmosphere reflecting shared convictions. Pope Leo referred to the Nicaean Creed as “the essential core of the Christian faith,” highlighting its persistent significance in uniting Christians despite the divisions that have arisen since the Great Schism of 1054.
Community Responses
While many locals acknowledged the event's historical and religious relevance, opinions varied. Suleyman Bulut, a 35-year-old local, embraced the gathering, advocating for mutual respect across different religions. Conversely, shopkeeper Hasan Maral expressed discomfort, illustrating the nuanced religious feelings in a predominantly Sunni Muslim Turkey.
Support for Turkish Catholics
Prior to reaching Iznik, Pope Leo visited the small Catholic community in Istanbul, inspiring them to find strength in their minority status. His trip included stops at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and a nursing home operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor, where he interacted warmly with residents, offering blessings and encouragement.
The pope's tour will carry on with ecumenical discussions and interfaith activities, including a visit to the Blue Mosque and a Mass at Istanbul’s Volkswagen Arena. This journey affirms the Vatican's commitment to promoting dialogue, respect, and cohesion among Christians while engaging with other faiths.
