Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a significant dialogue with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday during the G20 Leaders' Summit held in Johannesburg. This meeting, which occurred on the sidelines of the summit, aimed at reinforcing the relationship between India and South Africa.
High-ranking Indian officials, such as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Economic Relations Secretary Sudhakar Dalela, participated in the discussions. The two leaders assessed the current state of bilateral interactions and sought new avenues for collaboration, particularly in areas like security, cultural exchanges, and economic initiatives.
Upon PM Modi's arrival at the G20 Summit, President Ramaphosa graciously welcomed him, an act that underscored the strong bond shared by their nations.
On the inaugural day of the summit, PM Modi took part in two sessions and emphasized the necessity of global collaboration, champions disaster resilience, and promotes sustainable development. He stated that the world must unite to tackle pressing issues and secure an equitable and inclusive future.
In a series of social media updates, PM Modi elaborated that the second session of the summit focused on establishing a resilient global framework against climate change, advocating fair energy transitions, and bolstering international food systems. He showcased India's commitment to these objectives through a people-centered development model.
Further, PM Modi remarked on India's establishment of the Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group under its G20 Presidency, stating that global issues warrant collective solutions. He proposed a transition in disaster management from reaction-based methodologies to development-driven approaches, referencing the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure as a testament to this dedication.
Additionally, the Prime Minister suggested a G20 Open Satellite Data Partnership to enhance access to satellite data from space agencies within the G20, particularly benefitting developing countries in the Global South. This initiative aims to enhance agricultural practices, fisheries, environmental strategies, and disaster preparedness.
In alignment with India’s commitment to clean energy, PM Modi introduced the G20 Critical Minerals Circularity Initiative. This effort aims to foster recycling practices, urban mining, second-life batteries, and other innovative strategies to ensure sustainable global mineral supply chains and promote cleaner growth.
The discussions between PM Modi and President Ramaphosa are poised to enhance collaboration across various new sectors, fortify strategic partnerships, and unveil fresh opportunities for bilateral cooperation between India and South Africa.
