Starting January 14, visitors from outside the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA)—which includes Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway—will be required to pay €32 ($37, AED 135.88) to enter Paris’s most visited museum. Visitors from the UK will face a higher rate, a museum spokesperson confirmed on Friday.
The fee hike comes in the wake of a dramatic October 19 heist when four burglars made off in broad daylight with jewels valued at $102 million, revealing significant security weaknesses at the iconic institution. Following the theft, structural concerns led to the partial closure of one of the museum’s wings in November, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures.
In response, the museum administration, following recommendations from France’s state auditor to prioritize security over acquisitions, announced plans to install 100 external surveillance cameras by the end of 2026. These upgrades are part of a broader six-year renovation project aimed at modernizing facilities and ensuring visitor safety.
The museum welcomed nearly nine million visitors last year, with around three-quarters coming from abroad. Officials estimate the new entry fees could generate an additional €15-20 million annually, helping fund both security enhancements and ongoing renovations.
Other historic attractions in France, including the Palace of Versailles, the Gothic-style Sainte Chapelle chapel, the Paris Opera House, and Chambord Chateau in the Loire Valley, are also expected to increase ticket prices next year.
Meanwhile, police have arrested the four main suspects in the jewel theft along with several others suspected of involvement. The stolen jewels have not yet been recovered.
