In a significant transformation of the football broadcasting scene in the UK, Paramount+ has successfully outbid TNT Sports to acquire the majority of UEFA Champions League broadcasting rights for the period from 2027 to 2031.
This agreement signifies a pivotal moment as TNT Sports, which has represented Champions League coverage in Britain since the 2015-16 season, is set to lose most of its match rights. Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video will maintain its exclusive slots for Tuesday night fixtures, thus keeping its foothold in the UK market.
The bidding war that culminated in Paramount's victory illustrates the intensifying competition for prestigious football broadcasting rights among major media entities. Reports indicate that Paramount's financial offer notably exceeded the approximately £1 billion TNT Sports was paying under its existing contract.
This loss represents a significant setback for TNT Sports’ parent companies, BT Group and Warner Bros Discovery Inc., who have argued that their bid was made with “financial responsibility for both the business and customers.” Despite the defeat, they assert that their rich sports portfolio, encompassing the English Premier League and other premium events, remains robust.
Furthermore, this event reinforces Paramount’s aspirations in European sports, especially as it currently broadcasts the Champions League in the U.S. For UK viewers, this shift may necessitate a new subscription to follow crucial Champions League matches after 2027.
