West Ham's Lucas Paquetá expressed his anger following his red card during Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool, accusing the Football Association of failing to support him throughout a lengthy investigation that overshadowed his career.
Paquetá received two quick yellow cards for dissent, resulting in his dismissal during the match—a moment that unleashed pent-up emotions he had been carrying for months.
The Brazilian midfielder was under investigation for two years while the FA looked into claims that he had sought bookings linked to suspicious betting practices. Although he was cleared in July, the extended scrutiny cost him a chance for a significant transfer and took a toll on his mental health.
Post-match, the 28-year-old took to social media to voice the deep impact the experience had on him.
“It’s difficult to cope with everything this situation has caused in my life and mindset,” he stated. “I’ll work to ensure it doesn’t affect me further. This does not excuse my sending-off, and I apologize to my teammates and fans.”
His anger intensified after a pundit deemed his actions “absurd.” Paquetá countered, stating his pitch reaction stemmed from the pressure of the two-year investigation.
“It’s absurd to have my life and career impacted for two years without any psychological assistance from the federation,” he continued. “This behavior may be a reflection of what I’ve had to endure. I apologize if I’m not perfect.”
West Ham is anticipated to discuss the midfielder’s suspension later this week.
