At least 400 people have been killed and around 250 injured after an airstrike allegedly carried out by the Pakistani military struck a drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, Taliban authorities said on Tuesday. The attack reportedly occurred late Monday night, striking the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital and destroying large portions of the 2,000‑bed facility.
The Taliban government condemned the reported strike as a blatant violation of Afghan sovereignty and international law, claiming that the bombing hit a civilian medical facility where people were undergoing treatment for drug addiction. According to Taliban spokespersons, the casualties could rise further as rescue teams sift through the rubble.
Pakistan’s Response
Pakistan has firmly denied targeting a hospital or other civilian structures in Kabul, describing the operation as precision strikes against military installations, ammunition depots, and militant infrastructure allegedly used by the Taliban regime to support terror proxies. Islamabad said its actions were part of an ongoing campaign against cross‑border militancy and terrorism threats.
The Pakistani Information Minister stated that the air operations focused only on military and strategic sites in Kabul and nearby eastern provinces such as Nangarhar. He accused Taliban forces of harboring militants that threaten security inside Pakistan.
Escalation of Cross‑Border Tensions
The alleged hospital strike comes amid a broader escalation of conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan that began in late February 2026. The two neighbours have been engaged in repeated cross‑border fighting, with both sides trading accusations of airstrikes and attacks. Pakistan earlier declared what its Defence Minister described as an “open war” on Afghanistan after clashes along the shared border.
Recent border fighting has disrupted a previously brokered ceasefire and resulted in dozens of deaths on both sides, including civilian casualties and military personnel. International actors including the United Nations have expressed concern over the rising violence and called for restraint.
Humanitarian Impact and Reaction
Eyewitnesses and rescuers reported chaos and thick smoke as fire engulfed parts of the hospital complex, with ambulances rushing the wounded to other medical facilities. The scale of casualties and destruction has sparked global concern, with advocates warning of a deepening humanitarian crisis if the conflict continues unchecked.
