Tohoku Electric Power in Japan announced on Friday that it has temporarily suspended operations at the No. 2 reactor of the Onagawa Nuclear Power Station. This decision was made after radioactive steam was detected within the turbine building.
According to local news sources, the steam was found around 5:10 pm during routine operations. The company assured that there has been no leakage of radioactive materials into the surrounding environment, and this precautionary shutdown aims to facilitate thorough inspections and safety evaluations.
The utility confirmed that the incident is unrelated to the magnitude 6.4 earthquake that occurred later on Friday in northeastern Japan.
The No. 2 reactor had recently resumed operations following maintenance checks, with plans for commercial operations to commence on June 9.
Authorities indicated that additional inspections are being conducted to determine the root cause of the radioactive steam detection.
