Oman’s persistent diplomatic initiatives have yielded the safe release of nine Filipino sailors held for months in Yemen, following the sinking of their ship, the MV Eternity C, in the Red Sea earlier this year. Their return to Omani authorities signifies a significant milestone in a protracted situation that began in mid-2025.
This operation was made possible through ongoing cooperation between Muscat and the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, as reported by the Omani news source Atheer. Representatives from the Philippine Embassy and the Migrant Workers Office in Muscat are currently finalizing the necessary travel arrangements to expedite the sailors' return home.
The case garnered wider diplomatic focus in July when Philippine Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro brought up the topic during discussions with Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi. Subsequent talks in November successfully rekindled stalled negotiations, enabling dialogue with authorities in Yemen.
Following extensive quiet diplomacy, the crew members were officially transferred to Omani custody and safely transported out of Yemen. The repatriation is expected to proceed swiftly, with families in the Philippines already notified.
This incident underscores Oman’s rising role as a neutral party in regional conflicts. By fostering communication even amid complex crises, Muscat continues to contribute significantly towards alleviating humanitarian issues and guiding challenging scenarios toward peaceful resolutions.
