Environment Authority has launched a coral reef cultivation project in the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve as part of ongoing efforts to protect marine ecosystems and enhance biodiversity in the Sultanate of Oman.
The initiative focuses on rehabilitating rare coral species by outplanting between 600 and 1,000 coral fragments using direct fixation techniques. This effort aims to restore natural habitats and support marine organisms, particularly economically important species such as the Grouper fish.
The project has been introduced in response to growing environmental challenges, especially those caused by climate change and rising sea temperatures, which have significantly affected coral reef ecosystems worldwide. These factors have led to the degradation of coral habitats, making restoration efforts increasingly important.
The Authority stated that the project follows a scientific approach, including monitoring environmental factors such as water temperature, oxygen levels, and acidity. These parameters are essential for ensuring higher survival rates of the cultivated coral and maintaining ecological balance.
Regular biological and environmental surveys will be conducted to track the growth and survival rates of the coral reefs. A comprehensive scientific report will also be prepared to document the project’s outcomes and establish a model that can be replicated in future conservation initiatives.
The project is being implemented in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos University as the academic partner, along with support from Oman Liquefied Natural Gas. This reflects a coordinated effort between government authorities, academia, and the private sector.
Authorities expect the initiative to significantly increase coral cover in the reserve, boost fish populations, and raise environmental awareness. It is also expected to strengthen Oman’s position as a leading destination for marine ecotourism while promoting sustainable use of natural resources for future generations.
