In the ongoing legal battle concerning the estate of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, a fresh issue emerged in the Delhi High Court. Samaira Kapur, the daughter of actress Karisma Kapoor, alleged that her university fees have gone unpaid for the last two months. Priya Kapur, her stepmother, quickly refuted these claims, adding to the complexities of the case.
During the court proceedings, an interim injunction plea was presented by Samaira and her brother, Kiaan, aiming to prevent Priya Kapur from transferring or liquidating Sunjay Kapur’s assets until the legitimacy of his will is clarified. Representing the children, Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani emphasized that Samaira, who is currently studying in the U.S., has been waiting for her fees to be paid. He argued that, as the manager of the estate, Priya is obligated to ensure timely payments for educational and living expenses as outlined in the matrimonial decree.
In defense, Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, representing Priya Kapur, dismissed the accusations, asserting that all expenses for Karisma's children have been duly accounted for. He stated that there are no outstanding payments, and claims of unpaid university fees are untrue.
The incident led Justice Jyoti Singh to remind both parties that the courtroom should not serve as a platform for emotional disputes. The judge noted that such matters should be dealt with privately in the future and directed Senior Advocate Shyel Trehan, who also represents Priya Kapur, to ensure that everyday issues are settled outside the courtroom. A further hearing has been set for November 19.
The conflict over Sunjay Kapur’s estate has been ongoing since his passing on June 12, after reportedly suffering a heart attack while playing polo in London. In the wake of his death, Samaira and Kiaan filed a lawsuit claiming that Priya Kapur had forged Sunjay’s will. They argue that Sunjay had assured them of their rightful inheritance, which they believe is absent from the will currently in question.
The legal dispute has turned contentious, with serious accusations flying from both sides regarding inheritance rights, asset management, and the will's authenticity. As the case progresses, the High Court is anticipated to examine more evidence and arguments that will influence the estate's distribution.
