India Excludes Nitish Reddy for Kolkata Test Against South Africa

India Excludes Nitish Reddy for Kolkata Test Against South Africa

Post by : Maya Rahman

In anticipation of the first Test against South Africa, set to begin Friday in Kolkata, India’s assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, has nearly finalized the team's lineup. A notable absence will be young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who is set to join India A for an upcoming one-day series against South Africa A, having been released from the Test team.

This decision is part of a broader strategy by the Indian management aimed at adapting to the playing conditions in Kolkata. Ten Doeschate indicated that while Nitish is seen as a valuable asset for the future, the management has opted to include an extra batter for this particular match. Consequently, wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel is likely to make his appearance in the starting eleven against the reigning World Test Champions, South Africa.

Following the press conference at Eden Gardens, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced Nitish's release from the squad. He is now set to participate in the three-match one-day series in Rajkot, which will take place from November 13 to 19. However, he is expected back with the senior Test squad for the second match, commencing on November 22 in Guwahati.

The BCCI elaborated that this strategic move aims to provide Nitish with more match time after a recent period marked by injury setbacks. Rather than remaining on the sidelines, he will gain critical experience through competitive matches with India A.

Discussions surrounding Nitish's role in India’s home Tests have arisen since his earlier performances against the West Indies. During that series, he only bowled four overs in the first Test at Ahmedabad and didn’t get to bat. In the second Test in Delhi, he scored 43 runs while batting at number five but wasn't called upon to bowl, igniting debate over the need for a dedicated bowler versus a developing all-rounder.

Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir, among others, defended Nitish’s selection, asserting that the experience gained alongside seasoned fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj would be invaluable. Gambhir emphasized that it wouldn’t be fair to only include Nitish in challenging overseas tours.

Despite that support, Ten Doeschate underscored the priority of strategy over experimentation when it comes to significant matches. He remarked, “In the West Indies series, Nitish played both Tests, and we recognized the importance of his development. However, strategy is paramount.” He further explained that while the management's stance on Nitish hasn’t changed, the expected conditions in Kolkata have informed their decision for this Test.

Subsequent reports indicated that Nitish has promptly departed the Indian contingent to join the India A squad in Rajkot, signaling that India’s game plan for the first Test has been solidified, aiming for a well-rounded lineup suited to the pitch conditions at Eden Gardens.

The upcoming Test against South Africa represents a crucial component of India’s home season. Following a successful series against the West Indies, the team seeks a strong start in front of their home crowd. Facing South Africa, the current World Test Champions, will pose a formidable challenge, amplifying the importance of strategic selections.

With Nitish absent, expectations now shift to Dhruv Jurel, who is called to perform under pressure. The team will lean on its established players, such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah, to lead the charge towards victory in the opening Test.

For Nitish Kumar Reddy, this decision could ultimately be advantageous. Competing in the India A series will keep him match-fit and bolster his confidence before rejoining the senior squad for the second Test. The Indian team management remains committed to incorporating him into their long-term Test strategy.
