Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday declared a nationwide security emergency in response to escalating armed violence across the country. The move aims to strengthen the nation’s security forces and tackle growing threats from armed groups and criminal networks.
As part of the emergency measures, President Tinubu ordered the recruitment of thousands of new personnel for both the army and police. The police force will hire 20,000 additional officers, increasing their total strength to 50,000. To support rapid training, the government will use National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as temporary training facilities for the new recruits.
The President also directed the redeployment of police officers who are currently assigned to VIP protection duties. After a period of crash retraining, these officers will be sent to conflict-affected regions to help curb violence and restore order.
President Tinubu emphasized that these measures are urgent and necessary to protect citizens and stabilize areas increasingly affected by armed attacks. The nationwide security emergency reflects the government’s determination to tackle the rising insecurity that has impacted multiple states in Nigeria.
The deployment of additional personnel, combined with intensified training and strategic reassignment, is expected to strengthen the country’s ability to respond swiftly to threats and enhance public safety.
