New Zealand has unveiled its squad for the upcoming Test against West Indies in Christchurch, with Kane Williamson making a significant comeback. The seasoned batter, who took a step back from some formats recently, reenters the Test setup after being absent from the Zimbabwe tour earlier this year. His return is anticipated to bring both experience and confidence as the team embarks on a fresh cycle in the World Test Championship. Head coach Rob Walter emphasized the importance of Williamson's leadership for the team during this home series.
Fast bowler Blair Tickner rejoins the Test side for the first time since early 2023, having last participated in a Test match against Sri Lanka. His recent strong performances in white-ball formats have earned him a spot in the lineup. Coach Walter remarked that both Tickner and Jacob Duffy grasp the demands of international cricket and have shown commendable performances in recent encounters, bolstering the fast-bowling group for the series.
Kyle Jamieson has not been selected for the initial Test as he continues to manage his return from a long-term back injury. The selectors are cautious not to rush his recovery, opting for a gradual ramp-up of his workload. Jamieson is expected to make a full comeback once he’s match-ready, exemplifying New Zealand’s commitment to safeguarding its key athletes for the long haul.
The lineup also features Jacob Duffy and Zak Foulkes, who made headlines by taking nine wickets on his Test debut against Zimbabwe. Foulkes' standout performances in both formats earlier earned him a place in the 14-member squad, showcasing the selectors' belief in his capabilities against a formidable West Indies team.
Glenn Phillips has not made the cut as he is still on the road to full fitness following a groin injury; the team prefers he gathers more match experience before returning to the international stage. Meanwhile, players Matt Fisher, Will O’Rourke, and Ben Sears were sidelined due to shin, back, and hamstring issues, providing opportunities for other bowlers to emerge.
All-rounder Daryl Mitchell is back in the squad after recovering from injury, providing vital batting and bowling depth. His experience will be a boon for New Zealand’s middle order, particularly in home conditions.
Prior to returning to the national side, Williamson will play in the second round of the Plunket Shield for Northern Districts, aiming to regain his red-ball form ahead of the first Test. After stepping back from T20 internationals and playing only two ODIs lately due to a groin injury, this match is pivotal for him to sharpen his game.
The upcoming Test series against West Indies marks the start of the 2025–27 World Test Championship for New Zealand, who hopes to leverage the experience of veterans like Williamson alongside the emerging talent of Foulkes for a compelling home performance.
