Nelly Korda, a leading figure in women's golf on the LPGA Tour, recently revealed that she has taken a five-week hiatus from competitive play to prioritize her health. The 27-year-old American golfer expressed that this break was crucial for her to recuperate and regain strength ahead of her participation in The Annika by Gainbridge tournament this week. After months of rigorous travel and competition, she feels invigorated and prepared for the challenge ahead.
During her absence, Korda dedicated her time to enhancing her physical wellness, particularly focusing on her neck, which had caused her pain for several months. She decided to refrain from golf for almost three weeks to allow for complete rest. With a packed schedule that included 17 tournaments and extensive travel, she recognized the importance of taking a proactive approach to avoid serious injuries.
Korda reflected on her previous health struggles, including a blood clot in her arm in 2022 and neck issues last year. She emphasized her newfound awareness in listening to her body, indicating that she's less likely to overlook signs of discomfort. "I’ve learned a lot about myself and my body. If I had been more attentive earlier, I might have avoided several problems. Taking care of myself and heeding small warnings is now a priority for me," Korda stated.
Remarkably, her last win was at The Annika by Gainbridge last year, and she has enjoyed considerable success at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida, having claimed victory in three of the last four tournaments held there. Proximity to her home in Bradenton enhances her comfort level, making the event even more special as she competes alongside family and friends.
While she has yet to clinch a title this year, Korda has maintained a solid performance, achieving top 10 finishes seven times, including a recent fourth place at the Lotte Championship. She aspires to conclude her season with a win and close the ranking gap with Jeeno Thitikul, who currently holds the top spot.
"I’m concentrating solely on what I can control," Korda articulated. "I can’t dictate what other players do; my focus is on my preparation, my performance, and the commitment I give each day. My aim is to exert 100% effort consistently."
She acknowledges that the world of golf is inherently unpredictable, noting that even the best players experience fluctuations in their success, stating, "Some seasons you win frequently, others not so much. But that doesn’t imply you're not performing well. It's crucial to remain focused on applying your best effort and following the right process."
As she readies for her return, Korda's primary objective is to complete the season strong and healthy. Staying disciplined in her training, practice, and recovery routines will be key to enhancing her performance and preventing injuries in the long run. She articulated that her time away was about more than rest; it was a strategic decision for managing her long-term career.
Fans and fellow golfers alike have eagerly awaited Korda’s comeback to the LPGA Tour this week. There is widespread anticipation that she will emerge as one of the leading contenders at The Annika by Gainbridge. With her expertise, local support, and renewed vigor, she is determined to break her winless streak and embark on a new chapter in her accomplished career.
Korda summarized her outlook, saying, "You can't always expect to win, but you can always strive to give your best. That's my plan for this week."
