Authorities discovered the bodies of a Russian cryptocurrency entrepreneur and his spouse in a secluded area of the UAE, believed to be part of a tangled dispute surrounding a USD 500-million crypto investment venture. Roman Novak, 38, and his wife, Anna, were found encased in plastic bags and buried across a desert expanse near Hatta, on the UAE-Oman border.
The investigation began following the couple's disappearance on October 2, when they were last seen after their private driver dropped them at a lake in Hatta, intending to meet potential investors for a new cryptocurrency enterprise. Detectives report the duo transitioned to another vehicle before going off the grid.
Concerns were raised by family members after communication ceased, prompting Russian authorities to collaborate with Emirati police. Data from their phones indicated activity between Hatta and Oman, ceasing abruptly on October 4.
Initial reports suggest that the Novaks were deceived into visiting a rented villa where they may have been held and coerced to provide access to digital wallets associated with Fintopio—a crypto finance platform that Novak promoted fiercely throughout Russia, China, and the Middle East. After failing to access the assets, the couple was murdered, with their remains treated to obliterate forensic evidence.
Russian media outlet 47news indicated that the bodies were uncovered over a 500-meter stretch of desert, while unverified reports claim parts of the remains might have been disposed of in bins at a shopping mall. Authorities have yet to confirm these accounts.
This case has reignited interest in Novak's background. Formerly a prominent figure in Dubai's cryptocurrency landscape, he was convicted for extensive investment fraud in Russia in 2020 and served six years before being paroled in 2023. After relocating to the UAE, he established new digital asset enterprises. Investigators now suggest that his business activities may have accumulated as much as USD 500 million before Fintopio suspended wallet operations around the time the couple disappeared.
Seven individuals have been apprehended in Russia, while collaboration between Moscow and Abu Dhabi advances as UAE officials prepare to return the bodies for in-depth forensic evaluation. The incident is classified as a premeditated kidnapping-extortion and homicide, tied to disagreements over alleged crypto scam funds.
