New Britain, Connecticut: Authorities have charged the mother, her sister, and her boyfriend in the shocking death of a 12-year-old girl whose body was discovered last week in a storage bin outside an abandoned home in Connecticut.
The girl, identified as Jacqueline "Mimi" Torres Garcia, reportedly suffered prolonged physical abuse and malnourishment before her death, which police believe occurred last fall. The horrific discovery was made on Wednesday after neighbors reported suspicious activity at the abandoned property.
Karla Garcia, 29, the child’s mother, faces multiple charges including murder with special circumstances and conspiracy. She is being held on $5 million bail and is expected to be arraigned soon. Karla’s 28-year-old sister, Jackelyn Garcia, has been charged with unlawful restraint, risk of injury to a minor, and intentional cruelty to a person under 19 years old. She is being held on $1 million bail.
Jonatan Nanita, 30, Karla Garcia’s boyfriend, is believed to have transported the storage bin and other items to the property. Nanita faces similar charges as Karla, including murder with special circumstances and conspiracy. His initial court date is yet to be scheduled. It is unclear whether the accused have retained attorneys.
Speaking at a press conference, New Britain Police Chief Matt Marino said that Jacqueline’s body was found in an advanced state of decomposition. Investigators are still determining the exact time and place of her death. Farmington Police Chief Paul Melanson suggested that Jacqueline’s remains may have been kept in the family’s basement before they moved to New Britain.
Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and could take several months to complete. The case has shocked the local community and drawn attention to child safety and abuse issues in Connecticut.
Authorities continue to appeal to anyone with additional information to come forward to aid the investigation.
