Jamaica: Tyra Spaulding, a former Miss Universe Jamaica contestant and 2023 finalist, has died at the age of 26. According to local reports, she was found dead in her apartment on the evening of September 23. The Jamaica Constabulary Force confirmed that the case is being investigated as a suspected suicide, though the official cause of death is still to be determined.
The Miss Universe Jamaica organisation paid tribute to Spaulding on September 24, sharing a heartfelt message on Instagram. Along with their statement, they posted a video clip of her confidently walking the runway in a striking yellow gown during the pageant, smiling as the audience applauded.
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of the beautiful Tyra Spaulding. She was a radiant soul and an amazing human being. Her light, grace, beauty and kind spirit touched every life she encountered,” the organisation wrote. They also extended prayers to her family and loved ones, while celebrating the life she shared with so many.

Spaulding had previously spoken openly about her mental health struggles through a series of emotional videos on YouTube. In one post dated August 31, she revealed that resigning from her job had taken a toll on her mental well-being. Days later, on September 5, she shared another video where she described her ongoing battle with suicidal thoughts and the pressures she faced while balancing entrepreneurship and personal challenges.
In that video, Spaulding told her viewers, “I’m fighting for my life over here. Every day I get up, my mind tells me to go and jump off a building, to overdose on pills, or to hang myself. If I do nothing, I am going to die, guys.”
Before pursuing modelling, Spaulding worked in accounting, having graduated five years earlier. She was remembered not only for her beauty and stage presence but also for her intelligence, determination, and warmth.
Her untimely death has left the Jamaican community and the global pageant fraternity in shock, as tributes continue to pour in for the young star whose openness about her struggles touched many lives.
